marineM Streamlines Port Marine Services and Berth Planning

Portsmouth Port, Portsmouth International Port is a port and ferry terminal located in the city of Portsmouth on the south coast of England. It operates departures and arrivals for cruise ships, cargo ships and passenger ferries. It is widely known as Britain’s Best Connected Port with more destinations than any other UK Port.

In late 2016 Portsmouth Port chose marineM to replace its PortMaster system.

Integrated Operations Management For Maximum Efficiency

In managing frequent arrivals and departures of cruise ships, passenger ferries and cargo ships, timely information of berth planning including notices of berth allocations statues and updates need to be an integral components of the new port information system. The answer is the marineM suite of integrated software applications that seamlessly deliver integrated functions pertaining to marine orders, to operations and billing. For instance, marineM’s Berth Planner application delivers real-time updates to other parts of the system such as Ship Movement Manager that registers and track ship movements. On receiving updates from Berth Planner, Ship Movement Manager publishes vessel information to Public Information Display that lists terminal arrivals and departures of passenger ferries and cruise ships. Inputs for planned vessel arrivals or departures can be entered just once either in Berth Planner or Ship Movement Manager, against which marine orders are  generated using marineM’s Job Ordering System.

Better Management of Service Returns

marineM provisions features for service returns to allow Portsmouth Port pilots to register pilot service details via an intuitive web-based form based on the pilotage job order that was created for the vessel movement. This along other services rendered such as water supplies, consignments and berthing details are consolidated and sent into marineM’s billing automation application.

Automating Bill Generation Improves Accuracy and Timeliness

marineM’s Marine Billing System generates Portsmouth Port’s pilotage bills based on user-defined billing rules and tariff charges. Under the hood, Marine Billing System is powered by a rule based billing engine that auto-generates bill computations. Marine Billing System offers future flexibility for Portsmouth port to configure new billing rules that best suit changing business conditions.

Julie Shotbolt, Senior Port Accountant shared “Portsmouth International Port’s previous system was over 20 years old and though it had served the Port well it was becoming end of life. The Port also had a separate system to plan berth usage and to publish arrival and departure information to passengers. marineM gives Portsmouth a modern system that integrates all areas from booking a berth to populating the ships register, ordering a pilot, billing and providing passenger information of arrivals and departures on screens within the passenger terminal building.  All is undertaken in one system meaning that information is only entered once.”

Going forward, Portsmouth Port has the latest marineM tools to drive greater efficiencies, and improve operation turnaround times.
