Extra enhancements in Jewelry Software for Retail 27th Oct 2007, 3:17 pm by david

INNOVEZ One follows up on comments and suggestions that it often receives by email, customer feedback and through this blog.   The company’s objective is to serve its customers better by implementing dynamic ideas, converting them into regular system upgrades for integration into software such as the Enterprise Jewelry System.   Current users will get their upgrades gratis, and new users will benefit from constant updates (new versions) to their EJS software.

Comment 1: Innovez One has installed an EJS Retail program for a new jewelry retailer in the eastern part of Singapore.   Acting on a useful feedback from the client, Innovez One installed an add-on feature to the retailer’s existing software.   This new feature allows the retailer to handle consignments.   When a retailer receives a new consignment from the wholesaler, he may sell from this consignment or return certain pieces which are unsold.   Flexibility over a consignment’s disposal gives this retailer a business advantage.

Comment 2: An EJS user emailed Innovez One with the following question: How do I design different label styles in your program? Currently, the jewelry software does not have a feature that allows users to design labels.   Innovez One, however, reckons this feature worthy for enhancing EJS; and will work on this enhancement.   We hope that this has been helpful.   Innovez One encourages retailers, wholesalers and dealers in the jewelry trade to stay abreast of EJS innovations.

RFID simplifies accounting of loose diamonds 24th Oct 2007, 8:07 pm by david

IN the precious stone trade, security and accountability of loose gems pose a big challenge.   Innovez One has the effective accounting and tracking solution to take stock of all loose precious stones in transit, on hold or in the inventory.   As a management tool, it gives the jeweler or precious gem dealer, a definite business edge over his competition.

Innovez One’s RFID Scanning System offers the jeweler clear visibility and accounting of his stock of loose gems in a fast and seamless way.   Further, it improves resource utilization and slashes significant operational cost.

envelopes of loose diamonds

The  system consists of two main components: A scanner and a set of tags (label or insert type) of various sizes.   As the loose diamonds are processed through the scanner, every stone is itemized and displayed on the screen.   No single diamond is missed or overlooked in the process.

The RFID Solution – how it works

Diamonds are sealed in envelopes; and organised in a box shown (on the right) above.   Each envelope is then tagged either with an attached RFID label or with a non-adhesive plastic insert.   When the user passes the box through the scanner,  its reader captures the information stored in the tag for each envelope.    The system ensures total visibility with the entire display of the entire inventory in each box on the monitor screen.   The entire process saves umpteen man-hours compared to bar-code scanning.   The RFID scanner actually enables more work done with less effort.

The case for using RFID Scanning

Manual stock-taking of loose gems is obviously, out of the question.   The task is time-consuming and labour-intensive.   The deployment of a Bar-coding system, on the other hand, to track and account precious gems is not the ideal solution.   Bar-coding technology is slow and less efficient than the RFID-enabled scanner system recommended by Innovez One.   As described above, RFID scanning ensures more work done with less human effort.

Question: How fast can the RFID scanner read and identify items it processes?

Answer:

One hundred RFID-standard tags of various sizes can be read and identified in an estimated 1 – 2 seconds.

Consider scanning a consignment of 10,000 diamonds. In terms of equipment deployment using this solution, the job requires two Magellan Technology Reader units (see picture), manned by one operator.   It takes approximately five man-hours to complete the procedure of scanning all 10,000 diamonds.   On the contrary, a manual inventory check of the same consignment will require 20 persons over 3 weeks to do.   This translates to an estimated total of 2940 man-hours!    The time-saving for the task – about 2935 man-hours – is massive.

Gold Calculator eases gold price calculation 24th Oct 2007, 6:33 pm by david

INNOVEZ One developed the Gold Calculator feature for the goldsmith and jeweler who needs flexibility in the way they price their products. Most jewelers we have met over the years have a common requirement. Almost everyone of them uses a different formula to calculate their products’ pricing. This requirement spawned the development of the Gold Calculator feature; and merging it with EJS to produce Enterprise Jewelry Software – Version 2. The added value comes from helping the jeweler to beat the competition by customizing his unique price formula. Right pricing leads to business viability and profitability. This pricing formula is then applied to all the products he sells through EJS POS or Invoice modules.

Calculate Gold Pricing

CALCULATION

Consider the following example of a gold pricing formula:

( [ { ( FINE_GOLD_BASE x MANUFACT_LOSS } x MARK_UP ] + LABOUR_PRICE ) x UNIT_WEIGHT

The jeweler creates a formula, using the Gold Calculator, by clicking on some buttons.    He enters the known variables (in the left column) usually on a daily basis. These variables include:

  • Manufacturing loss
  • Mark-up rate
  • Labour Price
  • Fine Gold Base
  • Unit Weight
  • Total Weight
  • Discount %

The operator uses the right column symbols to proceed with the calculation: plus [+], minus [-], divide [/], multiply [x], group  (“[' and ']“).    He uses the bracket symbols to group the smaller components of the formula.

Consider our example again: ([FINE_GOLD_BASE x MANUFACT_LOSS] x MARK_UP).   The operator uses two sets of open/close brackets to group operations on individual formula units.   First,  he works out the formula unit: FINE_GOLD_BASE x MANUFACT_LOSS.   Second, he multiplies the result by the value of MARK_UP.

Innovez One offers the Gold Calculator software, a new addition to its range of innovative EJS upgrades, to jewelers keen to sharpen their business edge.   The company invites your feedback and comments on this software and its features.   All relevant inputs are welcomed.

Jewelry Security System Using RFID 26th Aug 2006, 11:46 am by david

Enterprise Jewelry Software integrates a security feature using Radio Frequency Identification technology.   Essentially, it equips the jewelry outlet with effective theft preventive measures and recovery of lost or mislaid items.

This added advantage helps the business owner with a reliable round-the-clock surveillance system to secure his inventory and assets.

Antennas are strategically located in each display space.   The aerials ensure jewelry items on display are kept under constant watch in real-time 24 hours a day. Thieves strike at the right opportunity.   Theft occurs when counter sales staff are at their busiest during the peak periods when the store is crowded.   In such a setting, when  sales people removed pieces of jewelry to show to the prospective buyers over the counter, security is at its riskiest.   In a moment of distraction, chances are high that the salesman lost count of the items on the counter or lost track of their where-about.   In a packed, busy and noisy place, would-be shop-lifters pick such opportunities to strike.

The EJS system will detect if an unusually large number of jewelry items are removed from the display area.   Immediately, the system triggers an alarm.   This in turn alerts the store manager and security personnel.   In response,  staff will check out the vicinity for signs of suspicion and sealed the store.   EJS can be integrated with a panning camera system to survey the store throughout the business day.

Innovez One strongly recommends the RFID-enabled Jewelry Security System to jewelry retailers, dealers and wholesalers.   It is an essential business tool that gives the business owner complete peace of mind over the physical security aspect of his costly assets and products.   For what is humanly impossible, EJS with its RFID capability provides security of even the smallest jewel.

The jeweler cannot manage his business if he cannot secure it.

Advance Jewelry Search Capability 11th Jul 2006, 2:24 pm by david

INNOVEZ One has developed new improvements to the latest version of Enterprise Jewelry Software Solution.    An advanced search function is one of the new features merged into the upgraded software.

Previously the system could only retrieve jewelry items information using a unique serial number or by bar-code scanning the physical product. With the latest revision, the system’s search capability has enhanced.   The team provided a list of search criteria that users can apply to match and retrieve relevant search results of specific jewelry items. The innovative feature enables the retrieval of relevant results from a stock of thousands of different jewelry pieces.

For example, Innovez One has added a keyword search engine to the system.   If the customer requests for “butterfly” shaped pendants, the user can select the relevant classification (e.g. pendant) from the drop-down list under “Category”.   The user then types the text “butterfly” in the KEYWORD text-field.   When the user keys in “Enter”, a flag-out list of pendants of various designs bearing the butterfly motif is displayed.   Also listed is whether the individual item is made of precious stone, metal or a combination of both.

The system can operate with either RFID or Barcode technology according to each customer’s preference.

RFID Tracking in Jewelry Management 20th Jun 2006, 2:39 am by david

Since 2002, Innovez One has been consulting its customers on implementing RFID based jewelry software management systems.   RFID can improve exponentially the business advantage of the jewelry trade.   Initially, skepticism of RFID relevance to the trade and resistance to change was prevalent.   But after traders experienced up to 70% saving in manpower cost, less losses due to theft  and other tangible benefits after RFID adoption, its acceptance steadily gained ground.

Innovez One would like to address the following common complaint :

RFID is expensive, considering the high-cost investment in equipment and tags.

  1. This is absolutely untrue, if one were to compare the technology investment and its long-term benefits.
  2. In the case of Advago Jewellery, we partnered a software integrator in 2003 to customize a RFID based solution. Previously Advago had employed more than 7 persons for inventory management, processing and handling transactions among other manual tasks. Their operational personnel usually spent up to 3 days to stock-take and account for all the inventory.   After the RFID based solution was rolled out, the inventory process-time dropped by almost 70%  compared to pre-RFID solution implementation.
  3. Another spin-off benefit: The RFID based solution opens up the entire supply chain for complete scrutiny of every jewelry item including its tracking and location.   At Advago, in one particular case, potential theft situations were anticipated by an automated detailed audit trail.   Upon detection of the unsecured loopholes and possible losses, the management took extra precautions at once.
  4. Finally, on the cost of the tags: Each tag costs about 1% or even less than the retail value of each jewelry product in most cases. Amortize that tag cost over the many lifetimes of the jewelry pieces by tag re-use, then one will see the overall costs dip further.   Compare the capabilities of a RFID-enabled jewelry business and its cost-benefits, it is clearly obvious that the latter exceedingly outweigh the former.   In addition, Innovez One has observed that the cost of RFID tags has steadily fallen, thanks largely to more efficient manufacturing processes.
