Tracking loose diamonds using RFID

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

One of the biggest challenges that diamond traders face with is in managing the hundreds if not thousands of loose gems. Imagine walking into the office with all these envelopes of precious loose stones stacked in boxes and …………………

envelopes of loose diamonds

try figure what is the current inventory status for the goods.

If you are using a barcode scanner, life is probably prettier although still rather tedious. For some it is an entirely MANUAL task, an extremely laborious job. It will take ages just to make sure all the numbers tally.

What if there is a better solution? Like sticking the box through a tunnel-like scanner, and everything about your inventory reads out to you on the screen?

The RFID Answer

Diamonds are placed in an individual envelope, and each envelope is stacked in a box like the above ( see figure above ). RFID tags are then stuck to the envelope (paper label) or inserted (non- adhesive plastic card), one tag for each envelope. When the user pushes the box through the scanner, it reads the information stored in the tag for each envelop and display the entire inventory for a single box on the screen. This is a HUGE man hours saver.

RFID ROI Question

100 tags can be identified in 1-2 seconds.

Take a scenario of 10,000 diamonds. In terms of equipment resources using this solution, it will require 2 x MTR units (the tunnel like scanner above), operated by 1 person. In terms of time, it will take approximate 5 hours to complete inventory check procedure. Contrast this to a manual system. For 10,000 diamonds, it will require 20 persons over 3 weeks thereabouts.

That comes up to 15 minutes per diamond vs 5 minutes per 100 diamonds. It’s a great saving in man-hours, no doubt about it.

Calculate Gold Pricing using Gold Calculator

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

We built Gold Calculator feature for the goldsmith and jewelers who need flexibility in the way they price their products. Having met jewelers for a number of years now, they share a similar requirement. Almost every jeweler that we have met has a different formula they are using to price their products. And so the case for Gold Calculator feature, which is included in Version 2 of Enterprise Jewelry Software.

The main benefit comes from giving the jeweler the extra edge to customize his unique price formula. Right pricing leads to a profitable business. This pricing formula is then applied to all the products he sells through EJS POS or Invoice modules.

How To Use ?

Calculate Gold Pricing

Let’s take the example of the following gold pricing formula,

( [ { ( FINE_GOLD_BASE x MANUFACT_LOSS } x MARK_UP ] + LABOUR_PRICE ) x UNIT_WEIGHT

You can very easily create a formula like that using the Gold Calculator by clicking on a couple of buttons. The left column buttons are common variables that a jeweler deals with on a daily basis. These variables are:

  • Manufacturing loss
  • Markup rate
  • Labour Price
  • Fine Gold Base
  • Unit Weight
  • Total Weight
  • Discount %

The right column are the operators - plus (+), minus (-), divide (/), multiply (x), group ( ‘(’ and ‘)’ ). Use the bracket symbols to group the smaller components of the formula.

Coming back to our example, ( (FINE_GOLD_BASE x MANUFACT_LOSS) x MARK_UP ). Two sets of open / close brackets are used to group operations on individual formula units. The formula unit, FINE_GOLD_BASE x MANUFACT_LOSS is performed first, and its result is then multiplied to the value of MARK_UP.

This is one of the latest addition to EJS, do you think this is useful ?

Sokymat RFID Jewelry Tag

Saturday, September 23rd, 2006

Sokymat developed one of the first tamper proof jewellery tags in the world. The tag operates in 13.56Mhz. One of its most distinguishing feature is that the tag cannot be removed without leaving behind a physical electronic trace of tampering.

The tamper proof tag is priced approximately USD$1.20 per tag for a quantity of 40,000. In order to reuse the tag, the Sokymat delivers the used tamper proof tags to a factory at the cots of USD0.25 per piece.

Jewelry Security System Using RFID

Saturday, August 26th, 2006

Enterprise Jewlery Software implements a security feature using RFID. The solution approaches the problem with appropriate theft preventive measures and recovery.

Placing antennas into each display space, jewelry items are continously scanned real-time 24 hours. Thefts often happens at the counter when an enthusiastic sales person loses track of the items that are removed from the drawer while showing dazzling jewels to potential buyers. This is the opportune time for the attacker to strike, to conveniently drop off an extra item in his pocket.

Using RFID scanners built into every shelf, the EJS system will pick up if an unusual number of jewelry items are removed from the display. The system immediately alerts the store manager who tunes in to the activity and responds accordingly. EJS can be integrated with panning camera systems to observe any suspicious activity in the store.

This sharply contrasts a jewelry RFID system using handheld readers. A cheaper alternative, however the semi automated solution cannot implement the security feature described above. Missing items detected using a handheld RFID solution is often too late for item recovery.

Advance Jewelry Search Capability

Tuesday, July 11th, 2006

We have added a couple of niceties to the latest version of Enterprise Jewelry Software Solution. The advance search capabilities of the software is one of the celebrated new features that we have included. Previously the system could only retrieve jewelry items information using a unique serial number or by barcode scanning the physical product. With the latest inclusion, the search capabilities has gone up several notches. The team provided a list of search criterias that users can specify to match and retrieve relevant search results of jewelry items. To retrieve a useful small set of relevant results among tens of thousands of different jewelry combinations, this new feature is God-sent. In particular, we added a keyword search function. So for instance if the customer asked for the availability of “butterfly” shaped pendants, the user selects the relevant dropdown list for CATEGORY (e.g. pendant) and type in the text “butterfly” in the KEYWORD textfield and hit enter. What follows is a result list of pendants of various types (metal or stone combinations) that are associated with the text “butterfly”.

The system also provides both RFID and barcode modules, depending which flavour you prefer.

RFID Jewellery Software Video Demo

Saturday, June 24th, 2006

I apologise for the poor video quality. It was done by one of the engineers…Give some time and we will redo this. This video basically shows a standard desktop antenna that reads about 20 jewellery items. With a specially made antenna, we could scan hundreds of jewelry items in the store all at the same time. Cool!

Cast SWING out!

Saturday, June 17th, 2006

The dispute about SWT vs Swing does not make any sense to me. As far as I am concerned, applications built on Swing is not a viable commercial product on the desktop. It is just too darn slow, and it simply cancels away the “productivity” hours (value) that a valuable piece of software is supposed to deliver. Sure, any programmer with a certain level of SWING sophistication could manually tweak the code and optimize its performance. Firstly there is like 1 out of 5 programmers with some sense of that, and secondly nothing beats having a an IDE like Jigloo that quickly brings up a bunch of user interfaces that performs as per expectations.

The previous version of the Enterprise Jewelry Software ( EJS ) was built using Java Swing for all its user interfaces. For a system that handles thousands of inventory, accounts transactions, supply chain management SWING interfaces just do not cut it. Fortunately for us ( and our clients ) SWING is finally shoo out of our doors, Innovez engineers rewrote the entire user interfaces using SWT interfaces and IT IS PERFECT !. The latest version of our jewelry software product excels on User Friendliness, Speed, and Ease of Connectivity. It has built in RFID capabilities that helps our clients to take productivity to the next level. PLUS we love the fact it is completely built on Java technology. The final product is due release end June … just 2 weeks away.
